Description Trebbiano is an Italian grape, best known in the Orvieto wines of the hilly Umbria region (although its local name is Procanico). There it produces whites with delicate floral, citrus and almond characteristics.
An unsung hero Down Under (it accounts for around one bottle in every 1,000 exported from Australia), it was first planted there in 1832 by James Busby, a Scot widely regarded as the father of Australian wine (and who later thwarted French attempts to claim New Zealand as a colony). The grape thrives in the warmth of South Eastern Australia, where it takes on more tropical fruit flavours and added depth, whilst retaining its freshness.
Our old friend John Casella, realised the grape's potential and masterminded this refreshingly crisp, fruit-packed example at his family winery based in Yenda. The family emigrated from Sicily in the 1950s and were cane-cutters in Innisfail (hence the name of the wine), Queensland, until they bought their first farm in 1965. Today, they are a highly regarded winery. Their impressive history includes 350 trophies and medals in just four years, plus the Jimmy Watson Trophy - the Oscar of the wine world.
The 2007 owes its wonderful ripeness to the drought-stricken conditions of this vintage. The smaller berries and lower yields led to more fruit concentration in the wine.
