Split Rock slips down all too easily on its own. It's also a winner alongside prawns with a spicy salsa, a nectarine and haloumi salad, chicken, salmon or creamy pasta. Drink by end 2009.

Description
Since the 1970s, when Cloudy Bay gained fame worldwide, New Zealand has been renowned for its fabulous Sauvignon Blanc ... wines that rival the quality of even the finest from the Loire's Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. In fact, they are quite different in style, the French ones being flinty, steely, crisp and reserved, while the Kiwi versions are more 'in your face' and full of zippy lime and lemon character with an asparagus edge.

Named after the distinctive Split Apple Rock in nearby Able Tasman National Park, this wine is from Herman Seifried who built the first winery on the South Island in 1973, with the help of his local church. He'd only arrived in New Zealand three years earlier.

Herman was born in a small Austrian village but moved to Germany to study winemaking when he was 17. On graduating in 1967 he emigrated to South Africa and then onto New Zealand in 1970 where he accepted a job at the New Zealand Apple & Pear Marketing Board to become part of the fruit wine making team at the Nelson factory (although he knew no word of English).

He met and married a Kiwi girl, Agnes Wilkins, and two years later they realised their dream of growing grapes. 1976 was their maiden vintage and today the Seifried's are still going strong after 30 years and starting to rack up a whole host of awards.
