Description Verdelho is a bit of a hit in Australia right now. It's not widely planted, but the grapes from those few hectares are quickly snapped up, as it's the trendy glassful to be seen drinking, particularly in the cafés of Sydney Harbour.
The variety originates from Portugal, but is best known as the second driest style of fortified wine from Madeira. It has in fact been in Australia for a couple of hundred years, used exclusively for the fortified, liqueur wines of Victoria's Rutherglen. It took off as a dry white about five years ago, when winemakers realised how well this grape retained its vibrant acidity even in the hottest climates.
This wine is from the award-winning winemaker Andrew McPherson. Andrew's father, Jock, started the family in wine, by setting up a cellar in the Hunter Valley in the 1960s. Andrew learnt at his father's knee, then went on to prove himself solo.
He first launched the McPherson brand in 1969, then was responsible for planting and developing 1,000 hectares of vines in the Hunter Valley between 1971-4. Next he set up his own winery in 1974, sold it five years later and set off around the world to perfect his techniques.
He was back in the 1990s and relaunched his brand from a new winery in Nagambie, in Victoria's Goulburn Valley. Since then he has had great success thanks to his excellent understanding, commitment and investment. Andrew named the wine after one of his daughter's Alexander.
