Serving suggestions
This fresh white is delicious for sipping on its own. It's great too with slightly spicy Asian cuisine - Thai green curry, a seafood and vegetable stir-fry - or with chicken, fish or smoked salmon.

Description
Verdelho is currently the hippest white grape in Australia. Not that there is so much of it planted Down Under, but it is the grape to be seen drinking in the bars around Sydney Harbour. When young, it has a wonderful vibrance and aromatic freshness not dissimilar to Sauvignon Blanc. Then, with age, it develops a lovely creamy nuttiness with just a hint of spice. It is in fact a Portuguese grape that is used most frequently in the sweet fortified wine of Madeira ... all the more surprising then that it produces such delicious crisp, dry whites in Oz. The secret is, that even in extreme heat, it manages to hold onto its innate acidity.

This lively 2007 is from De Bortoli, one of the best-loved family wineries in all Australia. Founded in 1928 in Griffith, New South Wales, they now also own a cellar and vineyards in the premium Hunter and Yarra Valleys. Every year, they garner a huge number of awards, including, in 2007, two for 'Winery of the Year' from critics Stuart McGregor and Peter Forrestall in his book Quaff. McGregor wrote of them "This is a family winery that is showing the way forward. Every winery in Australia could learn something from De Bortoli." In 2004, he awarded them the same accolade writing "through their entire range ... value for money is always paramount. You can't go past a De Bortoli wine for a sure thing." Their most famous wine is Noble One, a tremendous sweetie, that reaps over ten awards each vintage.
