Description Over the last 25 years, Australia has won us over in the UK with its flavour-packed wines, overtaking France at one point as our top wine supplier. The canny Australians first wooed us with wines containing lots of easy, generous fruit and no hard edges and clearly labelled them by the grape name. We knew exactly what we'd be getting just by looking at the label, rather than the complicated style which is more usual in Europe.
Now Australian winemakers are keen to prove they can produce a diverse range of styles to reflect the different climates across the regions ... that a Shiraz, say, from the Hunter Valley will taste very different from one from the Barossa Valley, Yarra, Margaret River and so on.
Wiseman's Crossing is from Riverina in New South Wales, that was transformed 90 years ago from outback desert to fertile landscape thanks to the miracle of irrigation. The wine is named after an early settler in Australia, Solomon Wiseman, who built a punt and started a business ferrying goods and people across the Hawkesbury river in the early 1800s. The wine is pure Chardonnay with just a hint of oak to flatter the ripe fruit flavours.
Chardonnay was one of the first styles of Australian wine to reach our shores back in the 1980s - usually a hefty wine with plenty of oak to it. Today, this recipe has been fine-tuned so that the wines have excellent balance of fruit and acidity, with just a touch of oak-ageing.
