Description
Carmenère, if you've never tried it, is a revelation. For years the Chileans mistook plantings of this rare Bordeaux variety for Merlot with which it was often unwittingly blended. On its own it makes big, bold wines with a delicious, complex hint of rusticity.

This wine comes from the Rapel Valley, which lies south of Santiago and the Maipo Valley in Chile's Central Valley and contains one quarter of all the country's vineyards. It is divided into two distinct areas - the Cachapoal Valley to the north and slightly further inland, and Colchagua, marginally further west, which benefits from cooling coastal breezes from the Pacific.

Don Cayetano is the creation of the excellent family-run Luis Felipe Edwards estate. The first Edwards to arrive in Chile was a London-born doctor who jumped ship in order to settle in La Serena region at the beginning of the 19th century some time before the War of Independence.

It was Edwards' grandson who first became a farmer and winegrower in the south of Chile, and in turn his grandson's nephew, Luis Felipe Edwards, who returned to Chile from living abroad in 1976.

What sets Chilean wines apart is their New World ripeness of flavour, uncommon purity of taste and the sort of elegance normally associated with the best of the Old World. Here's a Silver medal-winning example!
