Description
Argentina is a vast South American country that has been slow to launch itself onto the world arena of wine. This is perhaps due to the fact that, until a couple of decades back, its domestic market was happy to consume all that was produced. However, in the last decade, its export market has taken off exponentially, and Argentina is showing the world the brilliance of its wines.

With a wide array of grape varieties thanks to the many Europeans - mostly Spanish, Italian, German and French - who emigrated there from the 16th century onwards, ideal viticultural conditions and particularly high vineyards that can produce world-class, fine wine, this country has enormous potential and is today already producing some really exciting wines.

Fifty Block is the work of the La Riojana cellar in Chilecito county in the Famatina Valley. The most important winery in this poor, outback part of Argentina, it is proud to boast official Fair Trade status on a range of its wines. Fifty Block is made from the top 50 parcels of Malbec, selected by the cellar in the 2007 vintage.

Since its winemakers made an entrance onto the world stage, they have made Malbec their flagship grape and are now receiving much praise for it too: "Argentinian Malbec is the best in the world" wrote The Independent, a sentiment echoed by many critics and consumers alike.
