Description
With the severe drought that hit Australia in 2007, plus the frosts, hail and forest fires growers also had to contend with, there has been a shortage of wine. This means that great-deal, one-off parcels, even from older vintages like this, are very scarce on the ground.

This is from an exceptional estate in Coonawarra. Halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne and part of the Limestone Coast, this region is one of Australia's most prestigious and well-known. Why? Its terra rossa soils are some of the finest for viticulture on the continent. This celebrated ridge is only 27km long, less than 2km wide, and covers 4,820 hectares of land, but has the perfect combination of good drainage thanks to its sand and limestone content, with the clay component helping to retain some moisture.

The area was founded by John Riddoch in 1890 - he was the first to discover the wonderful properties of the soil. It was his great grandson, Peter Rymill, who founded the estate which has produced this wine. Thanks to its relatively cool climate, Coonawarra produces beautifully well-balanced, high quality wines, but is best known for its Cabernets which can have the depth and elegance of some of the finest Médocs.

Made from a classic Left Bank Bordeaux blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with a small portion of softening Merlot, this is a serious red. Barrel-ageing for 22 months in a mixture of French and American oak has lent deeper oaky complexity to the dense fruit.
