Description Cleanskins, in case you haven't heard, are a peculiarly Australian thing. The word describes a bottle with no label at all (legal in Australia) though for export, minimal information must appear on the bottle. It's a way for wineries to sell surplus wines at low prices without undermining the established price of their main-label wines. For you, that means simply an opportunity to enjoy a bargain.
In the FT not long ago, Jancis Robinson MW said "cheap Australian wine is a thing of the past". Such comments simply intensify our determination to bring you undervalued gems like this.
This premium oak-aged beauty was all but 'stolen' from a leading supplier in Eastern Australia. Shiraz and Cabernet are two grapes that are made for one another and have long defined the classic Australian red style (indeed Penfold's Grange, Australia's most expensive red, is precisely this blend). It's been such a success that it's now copied (but never equalled) by winemakers as far afield as Spain, France, Chile and South Africa.
There's a synergy between the two grapes that results in what can only be called a 'velvety', mouthfilling texture, enhanced, in this instance, by a few years' bottle age.
