Description
Don Elias is pure Garnacha, a variety widely planted in north and eastern Spain, and the same as Grenache in France. There is a white version too, but the red softens and lends body to the firmer Tempranillo. When grown on older vines at very low yields, Garnacha produces impressive, densely flavoured wine with ageing potential - particularly in Priorat and, increasingly, in next door Terra Alta. This rich, spicy wine is from the Gil family, whose viticultural heritage dates back to 1842, when Ramón Gil Roijals planted his first vineyard. Now five generations later, Don Elias Gil is in charge and completed a new winery in 1997. The grapes for this 2006 were all handpicked from mature vines (over 20 years old), then underwent whole grape fermentation which brings out all the fruit character of the grapes and little of its harder tannins. The wine has received some excellent comments from the press: "a great alternative to ultra-fashionable Priorat" (The Sunday Times) and at a third of the price, it provides excellent value for money.
