Description
Only declared in excellent years, deeply flavoured Vintage Port is a must-have special occasion wine and the "extraordinary"(Parker) Dow make one of the finest. Along with 1983, 1985 was one of the best vintages of the decade.
Dow's was founded in 1862 by Bruno da Silva, a Portuguese wine merchant. The company began shipping port under the Dow brand following the arrival of James Dow in 1877. The powerful Symington group now owns the firm, an association which began in 1882 when Andrew James Symington joined the company. He was made a partner in the early part of the twentieth century and by 1960 the family had gained complete ownership.
As with the best ports, the grapes for this wine were crushed by foot, before being vinified at Dow's three wineries - at Bomfin and Senhora da Ribeira.
"Dark ruby-purple. Powerful aromas of raisin, blackberry and dark chocolate follow through to a full body, with medium sweetness and a firm, slightly chewy finish. Good fruit. Even nutty. Drink now" (Wine Spectator)
