Description
When we first went to Australia 30-odd years ago, the place was full of family-run wineries. Today, only a few remain … the rest swallowed up by big corporations. Fortunately the Angove family winery (set up by a Cornish doctor in 1886) have not only bucked the trend, but won medals galore including Winery of the Year 2008.
Grape quality is key. They own lots of prime vineyard plots, enabling you to enjoy the golden fruit flavours of pure Viognier and mineral-edged, citrussy white Grenache (the big brands have no time for rare grapes like this - their loss, your gain!).
In red, you've two cracking regions to discover. The cool climate of Adelaide's Limestone Coast gives you a Cabernet beaming with mulberry and spice. Head north of Barossa and you'll find Southern Flinders home to Angove's peppery, barrel-aged Shiraz. Do try them all - there's so much flavour in each bottle.
