Moldova
Moldova, on the Black Sea, is in the extreme west of the former Soviet Republics and attained independence in 1991. It has the best potential of all former states for growing excellent quality international varieties.
Moldova has been a source of fine wines since the days of the Tsars and during the communist years it provided one fifth of the Soviet Union's wine requirements. The country's vine-growing advantage lies in the fact that it shares the same latitude as Burgundy, has relatively poor soils and the climate is tempered by the Black Sea.
In particular, the Tsars favoured wines from the region of Cahul and we are in the vanguard of importers now rediscovering this exceptional region. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and delicate sparkling wines of great merit are just some of the treasures you can enjoy today.
