Burgundy

Burgundy wines have been famous for centuries. The jewel in the crown is the Côte d'Or which divides into the Côtes de Nuits and the Côtes de Beaune. 100 kilometres to the north is the village of Chablis and to the south of the Côte is the Maconnais. There are fine wines to be found at every turn in Burgundy and though it may be a complex region, it is well worth getting to know. The principal grapes are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and few would dispute this magnificent region produces the very finest examples in the world.

With the exception of Chablis, every region of Burgundy makes both red and white wines in varying proportions. Basic Bourgogne Rouge or Bourgogne Blanc may come from anywhere in the region – from Nuits-St-Georges in the north to Mâcon in the south - so it is important to know the producer and where the grapes for his wine have come from. If from the best areas and domaines, these basic Bourgogne wines can offer deceptively fine quality and value. We specialise in seeking out such ‘hidden' bargains.
