Established in the 1980s, Molino di Sant’Antimo sits at the heart of the sundrenched Val d’Orcia at the southeast end of Montalcino. This is Brunello’s final frontier. Famed producer Poggio di Sotto, whose wines sell for $200+, is about a mile away. Here, the valley narrows, and the landscape rises 850 feet before tumbling to the banks of the Orcia river below. For most, this is Sangiovese country. But through in-depth soil analysis, the Vittori family identified one site particularly well-suited to Cabernet, from which they believed the grape could “carry the soul of Montalcino.”

Everything is farmed organically and methodically by Carlo Vittori, while his daughter Valeria makes the wines. Though 2022 was a particularly hot and dry year, the family’s resilient vines resisted the stress of the heat, leading to seriously concentrated flavors in the grapes. This means that, while Le Fughe is already a perennial 90+ point favorite of critics like James Suckling, this release promises to be especially enticing.
