Beyond the Label

Its recent elevation to cru status (alongside Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas) has “propelled Rasteau reds into the big leagues,” says Decanter. This small corner of the southern Rhône, perched on a small, south-facing hill, is home to full-flavored, Grenache-heavy reds – and we can’t wait until you taste this one, which sports two international gold medals and a 92-point score from The Wine Advocate:

“Domaine Martin's lovely 2016 Rasteau pours on the spice, dusting notes of cracked pepper and ground clove over raspberry fruit. It's medium to full-bodied, with a creamy, lush feel on the mid-palate that firms up on the finish, suggesting it should drink well for 5-8 years.”

Domaine Martin is a small, family-owned operation (since 1905!), now run by fifth-generation brothers David and Eric Martin. Their old vines yield only a small amount of grapes, but since 2016 is being hailed as “an excitingly powerful and sleek follow-up to the exuberant 2015s” (Wine Spectator), the grapes they did yield ripened to perfection.

It’s a classic Rhône blend of Grenache (65%), Syrah (25%) and Mourvèdre (15%). Eight months in barrel adds extra spice to the ripe dark berry flavors. Few cases imported – first come, first served.
