Malbec, the great red of Argentina, is Opi’s specialty. He’s even been dubbed ‘The Malbec Magician’ by his fellow winemakers. Usually, he makes Malbec in Mendoza, but for this exciting new Reserve, he’s headed way, way south (roughly 600 miles) to Patagonia.
Why? With its brilliant sunshine balanced by cool Antarctic winds, Patagonia is perfectly situated for Malbec with unparalleled freshness and purity of flavor. For this Reserve, Opi included a dash of Merlot (just 5%) for balance, and aged just 20% of the wine in barrel for three months to impart a bit of spice—taking care to let the Malbec's freshness and purity of fruit be the big star. Opi has told us many times that his favorite part about making wine is the blending and aging process, and this wine is a great example of that dedication to his craft.
J Opi Reserve Patagonia is elegant and structured, on par with a great Bordeaux. It offers generous notes of black fruit, subtle minty spice, hints of vanilla from oak aging and structured tannins. A delicious match for hearty roasts, juicy steaks and more.
