Beyond the Label

Provence’s rosés steal the spotlight, but look beyond this storied (and often pricey) region, and you’ll find world-class pinks tucked away in other parts of southern France. Case in point: Violette de Mireval, an elegant rosé from talented winemaker Nicole McPheeters and the under-the-radar Comté Tolosan region.

In southwest France, Comté Tolosan is part of the Aquitaine Basin, the plains that fall between the Pyrenees, the Massif Central and the Atlantic Ocean. With a long, warm growing season and rocky, well-draining soils, it’s an ideal spot for cultivating vines. The area is also home to a wide array of rare local grapes—like Négrette, the variety behind Violette de Mireval.

Though used primarily to craft varietal reds and red wine blends, Négrette makes stunning rosé. This classic example offers a pretty, pale-pink color, exotic, citrus-tinged flavors, and trademark notes of spice and violet (hence the name).

Uncork the wine on its own or serve it with Mediterranean salads, fresh seafood or Asian-inspired dishes. Either way, one sip is all it will take to transport you to the French countryside. Order your share today.
