Deliciously dark and lavishly barrel aged in fine French oak, this Reserva is from a very special boutique winery in the heart of Rioja – where you have insider access.
Altos de la Guardia was built from the ground up by Haut-Brion-trained Jean-Marc Sauboua and former Finca Villacreces star Hector Gomez – a labor of love where the two talented winemakers could really stretch their creative legs. After just a few years of being an established bodega, they’ve won a staggering number of local and international awards for their wines. And in 2017, they were named Spain’s Best Producer at the International Wine & Spirit Competition.
This pure Tempranillo, harvested from their oldest (60+ years) vineyards in the premium Alavesa district, gives you a taste of their trademark style: powerful, elegant, and with an undeniable finesse (clearly you learn a thing or three when you hone your craft at two world-renowned estates).
While previous releases of Altos de la Guardia Reserva have scored dozens of high marks with critics, this 2016’s awards tally is already stacking up. It boasts 93 points from Master of Wine Tim Atkin, 92-point scores from two other top critics, ‘Grand Gold’ at Berliner Wein Trophy, FIVE gold medals, and more – so far, at least ...
There’s no doubt this is a very special bottle for lovers of fine Spanish reds – aged to perfection and just waiting to be opened and served with roast lamb or pork. (Tip: we suggest decanting the wine 30 minutes or so before you plan to enjoy – it’ll open up those beautiful aromas and flavors and really enhance your whole experience.)
