This silky new Merlot discovery hails from California’s Livermore Valley, a tiny region south of Napa and Sonoma with a distinctive east-west orientation, which allows cooling breezes from the San Francisco Bay to funnel into the vineyards, locking fresh aromas and flavors into the grapes.
This little corner of California offers seriously elegant reds at wallet-friendly prices. And thanks to the remarkable vintage (2014 is hailed as an equally fantastic follow-up to the highly lauded 2012 and 2013 vintages) the flavor dial is turned up – way up.
The grapes were so pure and, as winemaker Matt Praetzel puts it, “pitch-perfect,” he gave the wine just a hint of oak aging, letting all the high notes of the fruit shine through.
