Our Most Eco-Friendly Wine

Melissa, a do-it-all team player on the wine team, shares her favorite sustainable wine for Earth Day

Earth Day is just a few short days away, but at Laithwaites, we proudly maintain our strong commitment to sustainability every day. It’s a huge part of our company’s DNA and we strive to improve our impact through a range of projects, big and small.

Within our range of wines, a standout eco-friendly choice I personally love and always recommend is w/o rosato.

The wine was carefully crafted by third-generation winemaker Dino Taschetta at Colomba Bianca, a cooperative on Italy’s rugged island of Sicily.

Dino's winemaking journey began in his grandfather's vineyard, a piece of land he lovingly restored after an earthquake destroyed the village (which remains empty, almost like a ghost town) and ravaged the vineyards in the surrounding hillsides.

His latest range focuses on creating wines with the belief they should provide 100% enjoyment “without” compromise.

The name "w/o" echoes this mission of creating wines “without” unnecessary chemicals or additives.

His commitment to sustainability goes even further, reflected in every detail from the vineyard to the packaging.

For his newest w/o, Dino organically farmed Nero d’Avola in the vineyards, where the dry, warm Sicilian climate makes it easier to avoid the use of herbicides, pesticides and other chemical products.

The bottles used are made from 100% recycled glass. With these “wild glass” bottles, no two are ever the same. The label was designed without any foils or plastics, making w/o fully biodegradable and even easier to recycle.

If you are not already familiar, you may be wondering, what even is Nero d’Avola?

Nero d’Avola is the top red grape variety in Sicily. For this rosé (or rosato as they call it in Italy), Dino gave the wine a short maceration (when the grape skins rest on the pressed juice to impart the wine’s color). The result? A fresh wine with a gorgeous pink hue and delicate notes of cherry blossom, summer berries and grapefruit. I recommend chilling it in the fridge for 45 minutes before serving.

If you still need another reason to try it, this wine has won 90 points and a double-gold medal, so you know it’s the real deal!

Enjoy it with an assortment of mature cheeses, cured meats, light pasta dishes, roasted beef and veggies.

Each detail in this wine reflects the overall commitment to environmental practices—from root, to vine, to glass. This isn’t just a wine, but also a choice to be a part of making the world a more sustainable place.
