Major Global Wine Regions

Europe

Across the Atlantic lies Europe, which is home to some of the world’s most famous and expensive wines.

Bordeaux, France

One of the world’s most famous wine regions, Bordeaux is home to France’s best and most complex red blend wines. Varieties include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Carménère, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

Bordeaux blends from the Right Bank tend to be Merlot-based and are most often blended with Cabernet Franc, creating soft, rounded red wines with flavors of plum and blackberry. On the Left Bank, you’ll find Cabernet Sauvignon-based blends. These are bolder and more structured, with notes of black currant and tobacco. It’s common for Bordeaux blends to be aged in oak barrels, adding toasty, smoky aromas and flavors of baking spices and vanilla.

Piedmont, Italy

With its undulating hills continental climate, this northwestern Italian wine region is split into 59 separate wine subregions, growing a range of grapes including Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Cortese (which makes the famous whites of Gavi di Gavi), Arneis and Moscato. Piedmont is home to some of the country’s most prestigious wines, including DOCG-certified Barolo and Barbaresco regions, which make complex, age-worthy reds from the Nebbiolo grape. Moscato d’Asti—one of Italy’s most popular and slightly sweet sparkling wines— hails from this region, too.

A lightly sparkling wine, Moscato d’Asti is a sweeter, less alcoholic alternative to Italy’s most famous sparkling wine option—Prosecco. Made from Moscato Bianco grapes, it has flavors of peach, apricot, and fresh grapes, with soft floral aromas. It has a unique winemaking process designed to preserve its delicate aromas.

Interested in trying some great finds from Piedmont and Italy’s other famous regions? Try a Laithwaite’s wine club subscription and your cases will include some of our favorite current finds from Italy.

Americas

Considered part of the New World, the Americas are home to classic wine varieties with modern twists.

Napa Valley, California

One of North America’s most famous and popular wine regions, Napa Valley wines have gone head-to-head with classic French wines in competitions and won. This region is home to more than 400 wineries, and its vibrant landscape is ideal for growing high-quality grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling.

Cabernet Sauvignon is most associated with Napa Valley and is the region’s most-planted variety. The wines are famous for their bold, rich style and can compete against the finest Cabernets from the Old World—with the most sought-after wines fetching hundreds of dollars per bottle.

Chardonnay is Napa’s most popular white wine and the second-most-planted grape variety. Napa Valley Chardonnays are ripe and silky with juicy aromas of stone fruits and orchard fruits, with flavors of ripe apple, candied citrus, pineapple and a gentle, refreshing acidity. When aged in oak barrels, they can take on sweeter vanilla and baking spice aromas.

Mendoza, Argentina

Argentina’s Mendoza wine region produces nearly 75% of the country’s wine. It’s the largest wine region in Argentina, with high-altitude vineyards that thrive in the arid climate. Varieties like Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and the native Torrontés grow here. Thanks to the combination of long, sunny days and cooler temperatures due to the higher altitude, grapes ripen slowly and evenly, creating intense, aromatic wines.

Although Malbec is originally a French variety, it’s considered the jewel of Argentina’s winemaking. Mendoza’s Malbec reds are full-bodied and bright, with dark fruit flavors, including blackberry, plum, black cherry, cassis, warming spicy hints and silky tannins. The Mendoza wine region alone is responsible for over 85% of the country’s Malbec production.

Ready to discover what Argentine wine has to offer—members can enjoy some of our favorite picks in their Laithwaites wine club cases.

Africa

South Africa is home to some of the world’s most exciting wines, with a mix of Old World and New World styles.

Stellenbosch, South Africa

One of South Africa’s most famous wine regions, Stellenbosch has a hot and dry climate with cool coastal breezes. This makes it perfect for growing a wide range of grape varieties, including Chenin Blanc (known locally as Steen), Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. It’s also the birthplace of South Africa’s most unique red variety—Pinotage, the result of crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsault. Stellenbosch produces high-quality reds and whites, which are well-suited to the region’s climate, and is often referred to as the “Napa Valley of South Africa.”

Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc is known for its versatility and comes in a wide range of styles. Despite minimal rainfall and hotter temperatures in the region, Chenin Blanc grapes thrive here, creating dry wines ranging in color from pale yellow to gold, with flavors and aromas of baked apple, passionfruit, lime, jasmine, butterscotch and nutmeg.

Paarl, South Africa

Paarl used to be the heart of the South African wine industry until attention turned to Stellenbosch. Also part of the Western Cape region, Paarl enjoys a warmer climate and wider variety of soils compared to other regions, making it perfect for growing a broad selection of grape varieties such as Syrah, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc.

Cabernet Sauvignon wines from Paarl are rich and robust with intense fruit flavors of black cherry and black currant, plus that signature savory hint of green bell pepper. Fun fact: Cabernet Sauvignon is the most-planted red grape variety throughout South Africa.

Australasia

From South Africa, we hop over the Indian Ocean to picturesque Australasia—Australia and New Zealand.

Marlborough, New Zealand

New Zealand has 10 key wine regions spread across its North and South Islands, but the most important is Marlborough. This wine region is found on the South Island, and winemakers here make around 75% of the country’s wine. With its maritime climate and long, sunny growing season, the region has become famous for its premium dry Sauvignon Blanc wines, although other varieties including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling grow successfully here, too.

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is highly aromatic with a refreshing zesty acidity. This is because of its sunny and dry fall growing season, which allows the grapes to ripen and develop entirely without losing their characteristic acidity. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is prized for its bold flavor profile, including gooseberry, lime, passionfruit, grapefruit, and aromas of fresh-cut grass.

Explore a Laithwaite’s wine club and try a case of white wine from famous wine regions around the world, including Australasia.

Barossa Valley, Australia

Australian wines are considered some of the best in the world thanks to old vines and creative approaches to winemaking, with winemakers introducing new technologies that create exciting wines with every new vintage.

One of Australia’s oldest wine regions, the Barossa Valley is famous for producing some of the finest Shiraz and Cabernet on the planet, and is also home to other grape varieties like  Merlot, Grenache, Riesling, Chardonnay and Semillon. This South Australian wine region sits north of the Adelaide Hills, which is another popular wine region with a strong German influence due to its earliest immigrant settlers.

Top-quality Aussie Shiraz is one of the world’s finest, full-bodied red wines—deep, rich, and brimming with smooth tannins and bold flavors of jammy dark fruits, dried herbs, spices and dark chocolate. Compared to classic Syrah styles from France, Aussie Shiraz is bigger, riper and bolder in every way, from the body to the flavors to the degree of alcohol.
