Discover a thrilling cult white of the Jurançon...

Domaine Barrère is tucked away in the Jurançon, a small region in southwest France with views of the snow-capped Pyrenees, verdant forests and steep foothills traced by curving vineyards.

The Barrère family has been vignerons here for as long as they can remember. In the 1950s, Alfred Barrère decided to make it a proper wine estate, planting extra vines in the region's traditional horseshoe-shaped rows.

He was a great champion of the Jurançon and its dry whites. In 1975, almost 40 years after the sweet wines were named as one of France's first AOCs, he and his fellow pioneers finally achieved the same protected status for the Jurançon Sec.

He passed down the region’s great traditions, as well as the ins-and-outs of the vineyards to his daughters, Anne-Maria and Christiane. Annie-Marie made the wine for over 50 years. Before she passed, she shared the family’s winemaking ways with talented young winemaker Damiens Sartori.

Now, the winemaking duties are in Damiens’ very capable hands. Christiane helps out in the vineyard, and her mother tends the kitchen garden and serves the daily tea.

Thanks to your support, Domaine Barrère can keep their one-a-kind family wine going strong.

Ahead of the curve in the Jurançon

The horseshoe-shaped vineyard rows are the signature of the Jurançon region. They’re not just a beautiful sight. These traditional curved vineyards allow for the most sun exposure, so the fruit can ripen perfectly, while the cooling ocean influence locks in a vibrant freshness. For ages, the sweet wines have been the calling card of the region (they were even a favorite of royalty since the 16th century).

Now, the region’s dry whites are quietly becoming a favorite of wine insiders and serious enthusiasts. A recent report from The Wine Advocate said the region was “undergoing a Copernican revolution, complementing its traditional sweet bottlings with increasing volumes of some of the most exciting dry white wines in the area…All the elements are aligned to make the appellation a top destination for wine lovers.”

As usual, our fans were ahead of the curve. The first round of Vineyard Partners had already secured our entire allocation of that year’s vintage in just a few weeks—before The Wine Advocate could rate it 90 points.
