Beyond the Label

Patiently barrel aged reds are Spain’s calling card, and Ermita de San Lorenzo has long been a customer favorite. As thanks for your support, husband-and-wife team Miguel and Susana Ruberte has sent a limited shipment of their rare 2001 Gran Selección.

What makes the wine so special? The Rubertes craft it from the grapes of old Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon vines. These gnarled heirlooms yield precious little fruit, but the grapes they do produce have intense, concentrated flavors. That’s especially true here, thanks to the legendary 2001 vintage—one of the finest in Spanish history.

Once the wine is blended, Miguel and Susana age it in handmade oak barricas, stored deep inside ancient, hand-dug caves. This far underground, temperatures remain constant throughout the extreme seasons, allowing the wine to mellow and mature to perfection.

After additional aging in bottle, this fine Gran Selección debuted to a gold medal at Mundus Vini. It’s drinking absolutely beautifully and is ready to enjoy now—with layers of ripe red currant and red berry flavors, supported by hints of paprika, tobacco and leather from the aging. Decant before serving to open up its complex aromas and remove any naturally occurring sediment (a normal feature of mature reds), then pair with roasted lamb or pork.

A very special treat for fans of luxurious, barrel-matured reds. Act now for your share of our limited cases.
