Beyond the Label

Fans of Italian whites (or any vibrant, complex whites), this one’s for you! Fratelli Fusco showcases the rare Coda di Volpe grape and arrives with an impressive gold medal. It hails from the century-old family estate of brothers (‘fratelli’) Carmine and Marco Fusco, located in Campania’s Beneventano region. Wines made from this native grape are difficult to find in the United States, which is why we’re so pleased to make this delicious introduction.

Coda di Volpe means ‘tail of the fox’—a cunningly appropriate name for a rust-colored grape that grows in long bunches resembling a fox’s bushy tail. It’s been used to make wine in Campania since ancient times because it thrives in the region’s volcanic soils. And thanks to innovative local winemakers, it’s enjoyed something of a revival since the 1970s.

The fresh 2021 edition arrives with a gold medal from the China Wine & Spirits Awards. It tastes every bit as delectable as the previous release, which critic James Suckling rated 92 points and gave this mouthwatering tasting note: “Lots of lime and dried-lemon aromas with spices and stones...layered and bright. Fruity and dry at the end. A beauty.”

If you’ve never tasted Coda di Volpe before, enjoy a glass on its own to really savor the wine’s complex fruit and mineral notes. When you’re ready for a meal, pair it with seafood dishes, including baked white fish, seared scallops or even sushi. You could also serve it with grilled chicken, white pizza or creamy vegetarian pastas. Saluti!
