This is one of our most exciting Bordeaux coups of all time...
Originally part of world-famous First Growth Château Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut-Brion produces exceptional wines in the prestigious Pessac-Léognan district. The estate’s 2009 Grand Vin sells for around $800 a bottle—far out of reach for most of us. But thanks to our Bordeaux expert’s insider connections (he trained at Château Haut-Brion), you have access to La Mission Haut-Brion’s lovely second wine.
La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion was made in the same exacting manner as the estate’s Grand Vin. It was crafted by Jean Delmas, widely regarded as one of France’s most talented winemakers, and is a classic marriage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. As the finishing touch, Jean matured the wine in barrels previously used for the Grand Vin. And then there’s the vintage to consider—“2009 was one of the modern great vintages for France’s premier wine region,” writes critic James Suckling.
Given La Chapelle’s provenance and quality, it should come as no surprise that the wine boasts a slew of 90+ point scores. Expert Huon Hooke rated it 95 points, while Suckling gave it 94 points and called it “a gorgeous red, with sweet tobacco, plums and ripe strawberries and hints of cigar box...so balanced and beautiful.”
The editors at Wine Spectator and Gilbert & Gaillard are also fans, awarding it 92 points and 90 points, respectively. And Robert Parker, perhaps the most respected American critic of all, fell in love with La Chapelle at first taste. He rated it 91 points and raved, “The wine is a remarkable effort...I could have drunk a bottle or two just tasting it from the barrel!”
Before you drink one or two bottles, we suggest decanting the wine. This will help open up its complex aromas and flavors, as well as remove any sediment (a natural feature of mature, barrel-aged reds). This gorgeous Pessac-Léognan will be delicious now, especially when served with roasted meats, but it will continue to reward careful cellaring through 2030.
