Beyond the Label

A blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris, Les Belons is a crispy, mineral-driven refresher with a delightful balance of fruit flavors. All in all, it’s an outstanding example of the French L’Atlantique appellation from which it hails, which isn’t too surprising, given where we found it…

When winemakers along France’s Atlantic Coast finish a long day in the winery, they flock to one of the many oyster shacks dotted along the beaches. (Who wouldn’t?) Only two things are sold here: oysters and wine. But, given these establishments aren’t technically, legally classified as restaurants, they can only sell one wine, so they serve the best they can find.

It was in one such oyster shack in Cap Ferret, about an hour and a half west of Bordeaux, that our in-house French wine expert discovered this little white named after Bordeaux’s prized oysters. Opening with vibrant lime and flinty mineral aromas, its palate offers both orchard and tropical fruit flavors, all anchored by that clean-cut mineral core.

The perfect match for Les Belons? Les belons, of course. These famous oysters (also called ‘European Flats’ outside of France) are known for their unique mineral taste and bring out the flinty notes in this lively white. (But really, any seafood would be an excellent pairing, along with salads, grilled chicken and creamy-soft cheeses.

Even if you can’t travel to gorgeous Cap Ferret, one sip of this exhilarating French white will take you there. Scoop up your share today.
