From the legendary Quinta do Casal Branco estate in Tejo, Portugal, Lobo e Falcão Centenário Grande Reserva is one of the finest Portuguese wines we’ve ever offered. A voluptuous full-bodied red, its layers of plum and toasty spice will transport you to the ancient “illegal” vines from which it was made.

On the banks of the river Tagus, just north of Lisbon, the property has been owned by José Lobo de Vasconcelos’s family for over 250 years. Founded in 1770, its 2,718 acres once served as the largest royal falcon hunting ground in the country, and now its vines share real estate with Portugal’s famous Lusitano dressage horses.

The fruit for this bottling came from a particular patch of very old (a century-plus) vines that local bureaucrats argue is illegal to be labelled officially as Tejo, simply because the plot is interplanted with equally old olive trees. But José is adamant about keeping everything as-is—and the wine tastes all the better for it.

In early 2024, Casal Branco earned a Sustainability Certification from ViniPortugal (the official association of the Portuguese wine industry) for various “green” approaches like this one, which promotes biodiversity. They are proudly the first winery in Tejo to earn the title.

Meanwhile, in the cellar, José and his team (led by head winemaker Joana Lopes) put the utmost care into this bottle. The grapes are foot-trodden in traditional lagars, which extracts maximum flavor and color. Then, it’s fermented in great stone tanks and given the ‘Grande Reserva’ treatment: nearly a year in the estate’s finest French oak barrels. The result is well structured and supremely balanced—on par with a top Bordeaux.
