Beyond the Label

NPR’s Wild Card with Rachel Martin rips up the typical interview script and invites guests to answer questions they've never been asked… via random cards pulled from a deck. To craft the NPR Wild Card wine, we followed suit and chose Tannat—a lesser known, underdog of a grape—to yield deliciously rich, dark fruited results.

Its grapes were sourced from a family farm in Lodi, California, “one of the top wine regions in the country,” where winemakers “have quietly started producing some of the state’s best wines,” according to Vinepair.com.

There, due east of the largest gap in the state’s section of the Coast Ranges, vines bask in beautiful sun throughout the growing season, ripening to perfection. Meanwhile, winds sweep off the Pacific and travel inland, creating an air conditioner-like effect that cools the grapes and helps them maintain acidity.

All this ideal Tannat was then fermented on its skins for maximum color extraction, creating a deep red-purple wine with firm tannins and ultra-concentrated flavors of black fruit, dark chocolate and spice. Open a bottle at your next gathering and encourage your guests to open up about your own list of unexpected topics… you never know what interesting stories you’ll reveal!
