Beyond the Label

We’re always on the lookout for great value Pinot and Purple Owl is one of our favorites. Velvety smooth and ideally balanced, with vibrant flavors of black cherry and raspberry, it’s named for the purple owl’s clover that blankets some of California’s vineyards.

Native to the state, the annual plant bears shaggy, pink-ish purple clusters of flowers that resemble clover, with thin, pointy leaves tipped with the same color, making them look like a paintbrush. The showy appearance has been known to inspire artists far and wide—including Ernest Clayton, whose work appears on the wine’s label.

(Fun fact: Ernest painted over 200 watercolors of wildflowers from around his home in the early 1900s.)

Tasting the wine brings it all full circle: Though bright red and black fruit dominate the palate, there is a distinct floral note that lingers alongside nuances of cinnamon and earthy spice. It’s a lovely red-wine aperitif and an even lovelier match for grilled salmon, roasted turkey and more.
