Deep in southern Italy, Puglia (nicknamed the stiletto heel of Italy) is a haven for authentic, rich reds that over-deliver for their price tag. “Italy’s star continues to rise in the wine world, and Puglia is providing some of the fuel for liftoff,” writes Wine Spectator.
As head winemaker for the highly respected Torrevento estate, Leonardo Palumbo has crafted his share of impressive wines. For this red, he chose an equal blend of three native grape varieties (hence the cuvée name ‘Tre Terzi’ or ‘three thirds’). When he tasted the final wine, Leonardo was so proud of his creation that he gave it his name—a longstanding tradition in his family of winemakers.
It's a smooth, full-fruited blend of Puglia’s best grapes: Nero di Troia for its violet aromas, silky tannins and elegant peppery fruit; Negroamaro for deep color, dark plum and earthy richness; and Primitivo for plum hints and deeper bass notes. They make a perfect ensemble—lots of dark, juicy flavor with ripeness and depth.
Very sippable on its own, it's even better with grilled meats, a tomato and canellini bean casserole richly flavored with garlic and herbs, or—of course—a hearty bowl of pasta!
