bold beauty from wild hearts in the Barossa
RedHeads 1888 Cab Sauvignon
Special 2022, 2023 & 2024 Vertical Offer
6 bottles (2 of each vintage) – $239.94 $161.94
12 bottles (4 of each vintage) – $479.88 $299.88
In the early 2000s, a group of Australia’s top winemakers began a little after-hours experiment in a shuttered restaurant called RedHeads...
Each day, they worked for the country’s biggest names, producing large volumes of good-but-boring wine, with decisions driven by shareholders. Then, come quitting time, they’d slip off to their shared space to craft wines they wanted to make, using fruit sourced from lauded growers they met at their 9–5 jobs.
The resulting wines were nothing short of brilliant—small-batch creations unlike anything else on the market that sold out instantly and stunned critics. “Each wine is very different and has obviously been made with care and passion,” said Jancis Robinson, MW, of their early efforts.
Today, the RedHeads name remains, but the operation has grown up a lot, with head winemaker Darren Harvey now calling the shots in the cellar, and operations having moved to a custom-built sustainable winery that sits amongst elite producers in the Barossa. (Read more about that below.)
The 1888 Cabernet Sauvignon was one of the first creations to come out of the new facility, and while many of the wines in their range have come and gone in the interim, the team continues to make the cuvée vintage after vintage.
The bottle’s label pays tribute to this heritage and their progression: It features a caricature of an old cottage on the property, which dates back to 1888 and is one of the oldest buildings in the valley, plus the names of the wine's first 400 Vineyard Partners, whose support helped them forget about logistics and focus on making the best wine possible.

A Vinous Evolution
For the first time ever, we’re giving NEW Vineyard Partners an opportunity to taste the evolution of RedHeads through the three most recent vintages of their 1888 Cab—2022, 2023 and 2024. Simply choose to receive a six-bottle set with two of each vintage or a 12-bottle set with four of each, then decide how you’d like to experience them.
You can taste the wines side-by-side (in what industry pros call a vertical tasting), comparing subtle differences that have emerged with maturity or from different growing seasons or winemaker choices. Or, you could just pour them at your leisure, enjoying each vintage snapshot at its surface level. As with RedHeads' initial incarnation, there are no rules here, just delicious wine in bottle.
Three VINTAGES to discover
While the RedHeads ethos has remained the same, each release of 1888 Cab varies slightly due to a year’s weather conditions, winemaker choices and more.
“Looking at all three vintages next to each other will definitely show off the meaning of vintage variation,” says winemaker Darren Harvey.
Here’s a bit about what to expect from each bottle.
A Green Revolution
For over 20 years, RedHeads has been pioneering one-of-a-kind wines in equally unique cellars; first in their shuttered restaurant space in the McLaren Vale and, since 2018, in a state-of-the-art winery in the Barossa, the home to some of Australia’s oldest vineyards and most prestigious producers.
While high-quality—organic or sustainably grown—fruit has been integral since day one, the new facility was custom built with green intentions top of mind. Run almost entirely off solar power, its off-grid battery system was one of the first in the country, while an on-site dam captures rainwater to be recycled throughout the winery and estate vineyards. These efforts and others have earned the team a long list of eco awards, including The Drinks Business’s Global Green Award for Water Management and the South Australian Wine Industry Association’s Environmental Excellence Award, as well as a Special Commendation for Power Management by the Drinks Business Green Awards.

Sustainability Snapshot
RedHeads joined the Sustainable Winegrowing Australia program in 2020.
The RedHeads facility was certified organic by a leading Australian organization in 2022.
Nearly 100% of the winery’s water is collected in an on-site dam, purified and reused.
Just over 95% of the winery’s electricity is generated from solar panels.
